Khrystyne Bento was born in pawtucket, RI, and is of Cape Verdean descent. Her mother is from Brava while father's relatives are from Maio and Sao Vicent.
Khrystyne became involved with the Cape Verdean Subcommittee in 2000 after performing many years at Independence festival as a member of the Cape Verdean dance group. She joined the Subcommittee as a member and within six months was elevated by founders as Vice President. After nine years, she became acting President for one year, then President for two years. During her leadership, Khrystyne increased funding for Independence festival significantly by opening up many funding avenues. She increased sponsorship from a total of 10 per year to over 40 and vendors from 14 to over 70. Khrystyne also added security personnel familiar with Cape Verdean culture enhancing the safety of the Independence festival. During Khrystyne's leadership, there were no incidences of violence.
Recently, Khrystyne founded the Unity project to provide resources to community and hold local centers accountable for the services they claim to provide.
